Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Thank you for everything Dr. Lavelle. You are by far the best professor I've had in my college career, and I'm very pleased to have learned so much from you. Your dedication to teaching is awesome, and you are very appreciated by me and all other students! Thanks again!

Re: Liquid Scintillation Counter

A liquid scintillation counter is frequently used for the detection and quantification of radioactivity. It works by measuring the intensity of beta particles.

Re: balancing redox reactions

You need to make sure that each element is balanced first, and then balance the charges afterwards. If all elements are balanced then you only need to add electrons.

Re: Homework Schedule

No I don't think so, but by checking the amount of chapters that we will be going through this quarter, you should be able to find how quickly we will go through chapters on average.

Re: Endothermic vs Exothermic Reactions

If a reaction has a positive (delta)H, it is endothermic, meaning it requires heat. If it has a negative (delta)H, it is exothermic, meaning it releases heat.

Re: What elements are included in n=3 L=2?

Elements 21 through 30 are included in n=3 l=2. While the third period doesn't have any elements with a d-orbital, the 4th period has the 3d^10 orbital.

Re: Homework 11.3

I may be wrong, but I believe that you should always balance the equations. The problem may have just expected you to balance the equation, and maybe Prof. Lavelle skipped over that step. Have you tried solving the problem with both a balanced and unbalanced equation? Maybe it doesn't make a differe...

Does anyone know the answer to question 3D on the 2013 final? It isn't printed in the course reader.

Re: Homework 12.65

It would be very helpful to me and other students if you could copy the question in your post. Unfortunately I don't have my book with me and don't know what question you are referring to. I'm not sure what the answer to part D is, but if it is close to 7, I believe that it could still be considered...

I'm having a hard time understanding equilibrium shifting. What does it mean when equilibrium shifts to the right or to the left?

Re: Homework 4.25 [ENDORSED]

You're thinking about the molecule from a two dimensional point of view. Using VSEPR, the molecule is tetrahedral in shape. When looking at a tetrahedral molecule, you will see that the Cl atoms will always be next to each other and the H atoms will be next to each other, resulting in a molecule tha...

Re: Chapter 4 Question 25

I found this short video to be kind of helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcJRH2ojkZA

After you draw the Lewis structure, you can determine the molecule's shape in 3 dimensions (VSEPR) and as a result, it's polarity. A molecule is polar if a net dipole moment exists.

Your example would only have 3 sig figs. In order for that number to have 3 significant zeros, it would have to be written as 5.6000*10^4. Hopefully this helped.

Re: Sif Figs for #4 Fall 2015 Quiz 1 Preparation [ENDORSED]

I think you are right. Because you are given 3 sig figs in the question, there should be 3 in the answer. I think there might be a typo in the workbook.
