Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Thank You so much Dr. Lavelle for making Chemistry a subject that I've come to enjoy whereas in the past I didn't like so much. I loved your teaching style and all the opportunities you gave us to get help on things that we didn't understand. You are a great professor. Thank You again.

1.25

For the name of the alkene I got 1,4 Dimethyl 2 butene but the answer is 3,4 dimethyl 3 heptene. Why is that? I thought that for the double bond it gets priority so it is 2 and the two methyl groups are on the 1st and 4th carbon. Also I drew out the structure and got 4 carbons on the longest chain w...

Section 4.3 problem 4.28

For the quiz coming up would we need to write out the full reaction like we need to for the homework or will the reaction be given to us?

I am confused as to how I should use the 65 degrees C to find the initial rate of decomposition. Is the temperature important in this case?

Chapter 14 Question 1

The question is to identify the elements undergoing changes in the oxidation state and indicate the initial and final oxidation state. The equation is H+(aq) + Cr2O7^2-(aq) + C2H5OH(aq) ----> Cr^3+(aq) + C2H4O(aq) + H20(l) The answer is that Cr is reduced from 6+ to 3+ and C is oxidized from 2- to 1...

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers

Could someone explain to me how to get #10 please? I am confused because we do not know the final temperature. I do believe we use the equation deltaS=qrev/T,by plugging in 200J/(273+20) you will get the answer. Where did you get the 273 from? I know q=200J and the temp. is 20 degrees C but where d...

Entropy

For a better understanding of entropy, I just wanted to know can I think of entropy as a random kind of system? Is what results from entropy random or systematic?

Bond Enthalpy and Energy of Formation

When is it best to use the bond enthalpy method over the enthalpy of formation method and could I use Hess's Method, Bond Enthalpy Method, and Enthalpy of Formation for every problem the asks for the reaction enthaply or do some have restrictions?

homework question 13.5

Why does NaCN (aq) effect the reaction with HCN (aq) for part A but for part B the NaCl (aq) have no effect on the NH2NH2 (aq)? And why is it 0.060+x on the ice table under CN- which tells me the initial of CN- is ).060 M when the 0.060M belongs to the NaCN not CN-?

Does it matter where the atoms are placed in a Lewis diagram?

For example, for CH2F2 is it okay if I draw the diagram with C in the middle and F with three lone pairs on the top and bottom of C with H on the left and right of C? The answer in the solutions for the text book is C in the middle with F with 3 lone pairs on the top and to the left of F with H to t...
