I'm not sure about about the second part of your question, but ΔStotal is 0 when the equation is reversible and ΔU is 0 when the equation is at constant temperature, or isothermal.

You're in the clear to approximate without using x if it is 10^-5, 10^-6 and so on. If it is 10^-3 you leave x and use the quadratic equation. But if it is 10^-4 you can take out x and to be sure you would then check if you're in the 5% range.

As long as the least electronegative atom is central in the structure and the correct number of valence electrons are accounted for, the order in which you arrange the dots doesn't matter.
