Re: Green Book Chapter 2 Question 16

On page 50 of the green book, E-3-chloro-4-fluoro-7-methyloct-3-en-5-yne, they number giving priority to the halogens, so I am confused on what the rule is

Green Book Chapter 2 Question 16

The answer key says the answer is 3-chloro-3-fluoropropene. Shouldn't the answer be 1-chloro-1-fluoro-2-propene? The two halogens should be on carbon 1 because they get priority over the triple bond. Or am I missing something?

Which gets priority in naming?

In the green book, when it says"The functional group has priority in numbering over hydrocarbon side chains" (page 47) does that mean we should prioritize our numbering with functional groups over double bounds and triple bonds?

Ea1>Ea2 because step 1 involves breaking two bonds whereas step 2 is the formation of one bod. Therefore k1<k2

Chapter 15 Question 67

Why does the answer in the solutions manual only have one sig fig while the question provides numbers with 2 sig figs and 3 sig figs? Shouldn't the answer have 2 sig figs?

Practice Midterm Winter 2013: Q5B

There was a previous response that stated that the degeneracy of configurations takes priority over masses. I am confused as to the answer for question 5b. Shouldn't CF4 have the lowest molar entropy because it only has 1 possible orientation and CH2F2 should have the highest because it has 6 orient...

Practice Midterm Q3A Winter 2013

When calculating the work done by the steam, which mass of the water should we use from part A? The mass of the water was rounded to 77.0 grams but then in the solutions they used the non-rounded value to calculate the work done. This results in answers differing by about 5 Joules.

HW 9.13

When calculating the entropy change due to the change in temperature, where does the the equation delta S = n R ln (t2/t1) come from in the solutions manual? Shouldn't the equation be delta S = n C ln(t2/t1)? And how are we supposed to assume that there are 1.00 moles of N2 gas without the problem e...

Chapter 8 Question 49

For chapter 8 question 49, when we are calculating the work using -delta nRT, the question never states the temperature but the solutions manual uses a temperature of 298 K; standard room temperature. Are we supposed to assume that the temperature is 25 degrees Celsius even though the question never...
