Why do we use "hydroxy" to indicate the alcohol groups in naming #9b instead using the -ol ending?

Final 2011 #1c

In Final 2011, #1c it asks for which has a greater residual entropy at 0K: NO or BF3.

The answer is NO, but I don't understand why.

I don't understand why step one would have the larger Ea when the y-axis was labeled potential energy for part c.

Are the reaction profiles different when potential energy v. gibbs free energy is on the y-axis?
