Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2017
how would you draw out 2-butene or anything with a number in front of it ??? The 2 in 2-butene signifies that the location of the double bond is after the second carbon. So you would draw this as a normal butene, just with the double bond after the 2nd carbon. In other cases, you would draw either ...

Because it says to calculate the vaporization at 298K, you have to assume that the water is heated until vaporization, and then cools back down to 298K

As far as I can tell, its best to stick with -nRTln(v2/v1). Thats the equation Lavelle uses the most on tests and quizzes so thats probably the safest bet

To be at standard conditions the equation must also be at 25 degrees celsius. This affects how you solve for it.

That's part of the proof to getting the equation for an reversible, isothermal expansion on page 31 in the course reader. Its much more helpful to use the final equation though, at least in my opinion.

Re: How to determine which is an acid and which is a base?
It's really really helpful if you memorize the list in the course reader. Other than that if you think about which one of the two reactants will be more likely to give up a Hydrogen, that is acid. It takes a little bit of thinking ahead for me, but once you consider that it is easier.

Well amine starts with an A so it comes before the chloride alphabetically. The metal always comes last so thats why the chloride comes before nickel.

I don't think so. Line structures are more of an organic chemistry thing and thats in 14B. I think you should probably be able to figure out the information that they give you but I don't think you need to build any.

Its asking you to determine what orbital the highest energy valence electron is in. For example, to make Zn an ion, you would need to remove an electron from its 3d orbital to give it a +1 charge.

Re: Electron affinity vs Electronegativity vs. Ionization energy [ENDORSED]
They all have the same trend on the periodic table, increasing across the up the group and across a period, but they all represent different things. Ionization energy is the energy needed to remove an electron from an atom which makes the trend across the periodic table much easier to understand. El...

Actually if you want the units to match up you should put it in meters. A joule (the unit for energy) is comprised of (kg x m^2 / s^2) so if you want the units to better match up you should convert nanometers to meters. Just be sure to convert it back to nanometers if it asks you f this answer is in...

Make sure you base your calculations on how many moles of an element in the molecule because that can really change your answer. For example if the molecule is AlCl3, make sure to calculate its molecular mass using 3 Cl atoms.

If you are asking this in regards to quiz 1, the question specifies that the energies should be left in J so I'm assuming that it will specify if it want the answer in KJ. I have no idea if this will carry over to the midterm though so its best to pay attention to the practice questions we do in cla...

Re: Sig Figs Throughout Problems
My TA told us today that it is best if you use the entire number through the problem and wait to round sig figs until the very end. This gives yo the most accurate answer. So as long as you remember to round and add units at the end of the problem, you should be good.
