Re: Preference in numbering

Also, when naming cycloalkanes, the where the numbering on the double bond have to begin? The numbering has to encompass the both ends of the double bond next to each other right?

Re: Preference in numbering

When looking at numbering, we try to prioritize lowest numbers over priority of substituents right?
For example, if we had the substituents of a methyl and propyl group on an alkane, and the starting with the methyl would get the lowest numbering, we would start with methyl right?

for every question with bond enthalpies vs enthalpies of formation, will the question specify what they want?

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers

When delta H is positive and delta S is negative, there is no way for there to be spontaneity at any temperature. This is is because entropy of the system is decreasing, and the enthalpy of heat is increasing. naturally, this would never occur in the real world. If it was vice versa, a positive Delt...

Re: Units of Reaction Enthalpies

So basically to summarize:

q is generally in kJ
Delta H usually in kJ
Standard enthalpy of formation is only kJ/mol

Re: HW 8.13 & Heat Absorption

if the system is losing heat, then the internal energy of the system decreases because q is negative. Vice versa, if the system absorbs or gains heat.

The units used are dependent on the situation. Typically, it is given in kj/mol unless otherwise stated.

When we are determining whether to use the z>8 or z<8 diagram for a molecule, which atom do we look at? Like for example for, NO, do we look at the z for nitrogen or oxygen ?

Re: Electron Affinity [ENDORSED]

you can also think of electron affinity as an atom's tendency or natural ability for wanting electrons. An atom with a stronger electron affinity is one that would be more likely to take an electron to complete a sub shell.

Re: Photoelectric effect

It is based on the equation , E(photon) = threshold energy + E(excess). If energy required to remove the electron is equal to the energy of the photon, then you will not have any excess kinetic energy.
