Common names on final

I remember Dr. Lavelle mentioning something in class that we only need to know IUPAC naming. Does that mean we do not need to know common names like Iso and Neo that are mentioned in the course reader for the final exam?

Iso / Neo when to use

On page 96 of the course reader, the first diagram was labeled to be isopropyl-cyclopentane. why cant it just be named propyl cyclopentane? what determines the prefixes of iso(or neo) to be added-- is it just the shape of the substituent chain?

Determining if a molecule is a nucleophile

I was looking through the course reader, and noticed that in the list of nucleophiles, the majority of molecules that are classified as nucleophiles were overall a negative charge and positive for electrophiles. Are there any molecules that have a negative charge that is not and nucleophile/ positiv...

What is the difference between exergonic and exothermic reactions? Is the same concept but just a different name because it describes a different type of reaction?

When B and C is significantly larger than A

In the course reader, it says if the concentration of B and C is significantly larger than A then the reaction rate depends only on A. How much is "significantly larger" so that this rule can apply?

function of a salt bridge

I am still confused on how the salt bridge maintains the neutrality of the two solutions. What exactly does the salt bridge transfer, and from and to where does it transfer and it's effects?

question on U=q+w equation

in the course reader, it says that if the change in pressure is 0( meaning constant pressure),then the change in internal energy is equal to q+w. How would you calculate internal energy if the pressure wasnt constant while the system is getting compressed?

bomb calorimeter mechanism

I am confused on how the constant v bomb calorimeter works. So I understand that for constant pressure, a reaction is taken inside a cup of water, and then the change in temp of the water is used to calculate the change in heat of the reaction, but how does the constant v bomb calorimeter work?

Energy of the system during expansion [ENDORSED]

In the course reader it says that the piston moves out the energy of the system decreases. Why does the energy decrease?? is it because the energy of the system is used to move the piston, therefore the energy leaving the system?

pressure change and the effect on K

In the course reader, it said that K does not change even if the pressure changes. Why is this true? Wouldnt changing pressure (for example decreasing the volume) affect the concentration and therefore the equilibrium constant?

Are Molecular orbitals different from when we bond with hybrid orbitals? What are their differences?

Also, when we draw MOs do we only utilize the valence electrons?

I can figure out what atom has which hybrid orbitals, but I dont understand why/when hybrid orbitals form. Do they always form when atoms bond? If not what is the criteria for forming hybrid orbitals?

I understand that psi is the wavefunction, and the psi^2 is the probability density.
