Re: Internal Energy in Thermodynamics

From my understanding, w = -P∆V.

So ∆U = q + w becomes ∆U = q + (-P∆V), which then becomes ∆U = ∆H - P∆V when you replace the terms.

Work of expansion is negative work.

Re: Calculating the change in entropy of the surroundings

From my understanding, I think of freezing and melting as opposites. Thus, the enthalpy that is needed to freeze something is opposite of the enthalpy change necessary to melt something. The opposite is indicated by the negative value. When an amount of heat is gained by something, the surroundings ...

Are Ka and Kb only used to determine the acidity and basicity of weak acids and bases, or can they be applied to strong acids/bases as well?

L is the variable for the lone pair electrons, which are the electrons that you draw as dots on the Lewis Structure. S is the variable for the shared electrons, which is drawn as a dash on the Lewis Structure. Remember that the dash means there are two shared electrons.

Re: Fundamentals M.5 Part B

From the given we know that the reaction is carried out with 12 mol ClO2 and 5 mol BrF3. From how I thought of it, I simply doubled the stoichiometric coefficients of the entire reaction. So, when 12 mol Cl02 is used, that means the reaction looks like this: 12 ClO2 + 4 BrF3 ---> 12 ClO2F + 2Br2. It...
