From my understanding, w = -P∆V.
So ∆U = q + w becomes ∆U = q + (-P∆V), which then becomes ∆U = ∆H - P∆V when you replace the terms.

From my understanding, I think of freezing and melting as opposites. Thus, the enthalpy that is needed to freeze something is opposite of the enthalpy change necessary to melt something. L is the variable for the lone pair electrons, which are the electrons that you draw as dots on the Lewis Structure. S is the variable for the shared electrons, which is drawn as a dash on the Lewis Structure. Remember that the dash means there are two shared electrons.
