Re: Post All Chemistry Jokes Here

why do chemists like nitrates so much? Because they are much cheaper than day rates.

Re: Does order matter in Line structure? [ENDORSED]

i also do not think the order matters as long as it is obvious where your drawing starts and ends

IUPAC Naming

For the IUPAC naming, do we need to memorize all of the prefixes that depend on the number of carbons in the molecule as shown in Table 1.1 on page 5 in the Ochem book? Thanks!

Re: Is there such a thing as a Third Order Reaction?

I believe we will just have to know zero, first, and second order reactions but the quiz will cover only kinetics up to page 73 in the course reader if that helps!

Re: Quiz Solutions?

I do not believe there are answers for the quiz in the back of the course reader, but many of the prep quiz questions are discussed on chemistry community if that helps!

Re: Heat Capacities [ENDORSED]

Specific heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of 1g by 1 degree celsius and molar heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of 1 mole by 1 degree celsius. The difference is that one is measured in J/mol and the other is J/g or kJ depending on what information...

Re: Post All Chemistry Jokes Here

A man and a woman are sitting at a bar. The man is wearing a shirt that says "Polar" and the woman is wearing a shirt that says "Non-Polar". The man gets up and suddenly says: "Sorry, I just don't think the chemistry is right".

Re: equilibrium constant

I think we need to know the general way in which temperature affects equilibrium by first determining if the reaction is endothermic (heat added with reactants) or exothermic (heat added with products). If the reaction requires heat (endothermic), then heating will favor the forward direction/format...

Re: coordination number [ENDORSED]

Coordination number is the number of bonds the central atom has inside of the complex, or brackets. Be sure to take into account ligands that can have more than on bond such a (en) or oxalato when counting up the total number of bonds.

Re: Drawing MO Diagrams

The more electronegative atom is slightly lower when drawing MO diagrams for a heteronuclear diatomic molecule. Additionally, if one of the atoms has a nuclear charge of 8 and higher (Z>8) then the sigma bonds are lower than the pi bonds.

Re: Electron Configuration for Fe 3+

When I work this out, I first write out the structure for the ground state configuration which would be [Ar] 3d^6 4s^2 and then I just take electrons out in the order that is written so Fe3+ would be [Ar]3d^5 since the 4s block has slightly lower energy and they are filled first. Hope this helps!

Re: Electronegativity in Quiz 2 [ENDORSED]

You just need to remember that as the difference in electronegativity increases, the ionic character increases. This usually occurs in the top right of the periodic table with F, Cl, and O being the most electronegative.

Excited vs. Ground State [ENDORSED]

Hi, I just need a little bit more clarification on the difference between the electron configurations of an excited atom and a ground state atom similar to the problem 2.39 on the homework in the textbook. How can you discern between the two?

Re: Balancing Chemical equations too slow... any advice? [ENDORSED]

I agree that balancing out the biggest number on the reactant side first is a good first step as some of the other elements tend to fall into place after that and match up. Additionally, I like to list all the elements on the side of my work in order to keep track of the ones I have or have not bala...

Hi, for the quizzes I believe we can only use a scientific, non-graphing calculator and they will be 40 minutes and completed in discussion if that answers your question. But, I do not know whether the quiz will be multiple choice or short answer.

Yes I believe so because light is also known as electromagnetic radiation and the speed of light, c, is a constant.
