Re: Z>8, Z<8

Okay so I found out from my discussion today that only HOMONUCLEAR problems (same atoms,e.g. O2) need the whole z>8 or z<8 thing. Heteronuclear (different atoms, e.g. NO) will always be a certain order, unconcerning z. So, for homonuclear problems, you just check the atomic number (z) to find out if...

Z>8, Z<8

I know Z is nuclear charge, and I know the consequent shape of the molecular orbital diagram, but I am confused with how we calculate the value of Z. Am I right in saying that the Z value is found from the number of valence electrons from the p orbital? For example, O2 has 4+4 electrons in the p orb...

Will we have to know how to do problems like 25 and 27 of the homework for the quiz?
They are questions that concern knowing how to write the chemical formulas for compounds such as manganese (II) telluride.

Im sorry if this was already discussed :-(

Wavelength (+ or -) [ENDORSED]

Hi!

When you find an answer for the wavelength of radiation emitted from the n-states, how do you know whether to make it a positive or negative value?

Thank you!

Re: Atomic Spectra Requirements [ENDORSED]

It's also helpful to just remember the inverse properties of wavelength and frequency; wavelength gets bigger from y-rays/x-rays to radio waves while frequency gets smaller from y-rays/x-rays to radio waves. Once you memorize a few frequency amounts along the spectra you can fill in the blanks with ...

Re: How do you go from meter to nanometer? [ENDORSED]

My TA gave us a pretty easy way to memorize all the SI units regarding to meters. For meters, millimeters, micrometers, nanometers, each one becomes smaller by 10^-3 and it is essentially in alphabetical order. So millimeters is 10^-3 micrometers is 10^-6 nanometers is 10^-9 (I know millimeters is a...
