You have to go in the direction that gives you the lowest numbers. So in this case you would go counterclockwise.

I found the definition of an open system online. It states that, "In science, an open system is a system that can freely exchange matter and energy with its surroundings. An open system may appear to violate conservation laws because it can gain or lose matter and energy."
