Re: Question on number 27?
I think Grace is asking why the ketone functional group has a lower carbon number than the methyl groups since we've learned that functional groups have the highest priority in carbon numbering. Why isn't it 4-dimethyl-3-pentanone instead?

Re: Numbering counterclockwise or clockwise
I have a related question - what if there is a functional group as well as a double bond? I know that the carbon attached to the functional group would be the first one but if the double bond isn't attached to that same first carbon, which was does the numbering go? Or does it not matter?

Re: Naming [ENDORSED]
I know substituents must be written alphabetically but when there are halides with additional alkyl substituents, do they halides always come first (alphabetically) followed by all the alkyl groups (alphabetically)? For example would it be 3-iodo-4-ethyl... Or 4-ethyl-3-iodo... ?

Quiz 2 Prep (#7 from Winter 2016)
I'm having some trouble understanding this question and the answer: Q: Which one of the following is true for a reaction that has only one reactant? A) If the reaction is first order, then t1/2 will double as the initial concentration of the reactant doubles. B) If the reaction is zero order, then t...

Re: Presence of a Catalyst
hi matt! Step by step reactions with catalysts look like this (the catalyst cancels out in the final balanced equation): Step 1: A + Cat. --> Int. Step 2: Int. + B --> D + Cat. Final: A + B --> D when a catalyst is added, the energies of R and P are unaffected, only the activation energy (Ea) is aff...

Re: Calculating Heat [ENDORSED]
Yes, it's definitely referring to the heat needed switch to another state of matter (I.e. Gas to liquid or liquid to solid, calculated with nHf) in addition to the heat needed to get the final state of matter to the desired temperature (that part is just mc(tf-ti)).
