For question 6b why is the y-axis labeled Energy. If we are told the reaction is exothermic can we also label the y-axis deltaH?

Re: Ether Naming

If this substituent was on the shorter chain then it would simply be 1-propoxy-pentane since that "substituent" is moved to the shorter side and becomes just a part of the chain which is no longer (eth)oxy but (prop)oxy

HW problem 15.65 solution

In the solution manual, it says "the reaction profile corresponds to a plot similar to that shown in figure 13.31a" but there is no figure 13.31a in the book. Is it supposed to say figure 15.27a because that graph makes sense for the problem?

Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2017

For kinetics, what part of the book is on the quiz? Does "Reaction profiles, Arrhenius equation and calculating activation energies" mean that it is only 15.11 and 15.13, or will the rest of chapter 15 be on the quiz?

Also, just to be clear, is Catalysis on there?

Re: Slow Equilibrium Step?

No. The slow step cannot be at equilibrium because that would mean there would be a buildup of some intermediate product that would go back into the reactant making that step actually the fast step.

Why is it -q(acetonitrile)=+q(ice) instead of+q(acetonitrile)=-q(ice).

If you get the same answer then does it make a difference how you write it?

Thanks so much! If we put this in our answer would it still be right since they'd cancel out in the calculation?

Why wouldn't C(2)-H not be considered a broken bond?

Also for the C-H bond that is formed is that with C(3) or C(5)? Don't they both form a C-H bond? Why does the answer say there is only one C-H?

Assuming the carbon atoms in glucose have 0 oxidation state whereas each H is +1, and each O -2, how many electrons are involved in glucose oxidation? C6H12O6(aq)+O2(g) --> H2O(l)+CO2(g) The answer says that C in CO2 has a +4 oxidation state Why does Carbon have +4 oxidation state? Also, does the qu...

But if the Gibbs free energy of formation of PCl5 is -305 then doesn't that mean that the decomposition of PCl5 is +305 and thus the decomposition of it is thermodynamically unstable?

Yes I know but doesn't the total change in entropy include the entropy of vaporization?

The enthalpy part was just an example from another problem I'm not saying we need to find it here.

The question asks us to calculate the standard entropy of formation of H2O(l). so we have H2(g) + 1/2O2(g)>>>>>H2)(l) the solutions manual shows: 69.91J/Kmol - 1/2(205.14)-130 = -163.34 Why would we not subtract the entropy of vaporization from this answer like we did in question 8.67a when we found...

Re: Homework Question 8.28

If there is no change in volume (like in a bomb calorimeter) , it's not possible for gases to do work, so work=0. (SInce work=PxdeltaV)
