Hey, If you read further it says, '...the oxygen can react further with phosphorus (III) oxide to produce phosphorus (V) oxide...' - so this is now another reaction, where oxygen reacts with an oxide (phosphorus (III) oxide) from the previous reaction, and not just phosphorus.
