Re: Endergonic and exergonic free energy reaction profiles?
For an endergonic reaction, the reaction is not spontaneous, so energy is taken in. Thus, the energy of the products would be higher than the reactants. For an exergonic reaction, energy is released and thus the products have lower energy than the reactants. also see this cool Khan Academy diagram o...

Re: Subscripts in a reaction
From my experience, it was not that significant to have the subscripts in Chem 14A. However, they can be extremely useful if you're working through an extensive problem. Overall, I have never been penalized for not including them.

Re: Importance of Sig Figs
hey! I had Lavelle last quarter, and it depends on your TA. My TA said that he looks more for units than sig figs, but that sig figs are still important. In general, just check sig figs to make sure you aren't docked points. :)

Re: Names of Acids and Bases on the Final Exam
Hey! I went to a review session yesterday and the TA said you would basically be shooting yourself in the foot if you didn't know all of the strong bases and acids. You should probably just be familiar with all of the weak ones. The TA said Lavelle would probably give us the formula (ex- HCl instead...

Re: Trans and Cis
hey! I was also confused about cis and trans molecules awhile ago, and I think the image I attached helps prove the comment before mine. Cis and trans molecules are going to be really important as we advance in chemistry, since structure plays a huge role in function (as we've all heard multiple tim...

Re: How to find magnetic spin
hello! I'm pretty sure we won't be asked to calculate magnetic spin, but it's good to remember that on an orbital diagram (this is probably not the correct name, but it's the diagram with the arrows pointing up and down to denote electrons in different orbitals) that an upwards pointing line is indi...

Re: Adding electrons for exceptions
Hello! Here is the electron configuration of Cu: [Ar] 3d10 4s1. Then, the ion has a 2+ charge so two electrons are removed. One is taken from the 4s sub-shell, the other from the 3d sub-shell. So the electron configuration of Cu2+ is: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d9. The noble gas electron configuration is ...

Polar Covalent vs. Unequally Shared
Hello friends,
I was wondering if I am incorrect that assuming polar covalent bonds and covalent bonds with unequally shared electrons are the same. If not, what is the difference? I didn't really understand how they were disparate.
Thanks!

Re: Naming Chemical Formula and Balancing Chemical Equations [ENDORSED]
The equation would be N2 + O2 --> 2NO. You aren't trying to balance the charges between nonmetals, since it isn't really relevant. The number of atoms is the only concern due to conservation of mass.

Re: Fundamentals
Hey! So I was wondering this myself, and I did some reading on the topic awhile ago. It seems as if a hydrogen atom was originally used as the standard of measurement, since this would be the logical atom to use due to its size. The problem later on in the discovery of the elements was that a hydrog...
