Re: Nucleophiles and Electronegativity

Do we need to have the more complex nucleophiles and electrophiles in chapter 4 (the ones drawn out in the first few pages of the chapter) of the organic course reader memorized? Or are those simply for reference?

Electrophilic addition reaction (p. 84 CR)

On page 84 of the course reader, there is an example of a two step reaction where the bond between H-Br is broken. How do you know that the H bonds with the carbocation before the Br bonds?

Re: Arrhenius plot vs. activation energy

Since the slope is m=-Ea/R, the higher the activation energy, the steeper the line. There is a plot showing this on page 75 of the course reader.

Re: Balancing equations

I keep getting confused on when you need to switch the sign of the reduction potential. If the given half equation has already flipped the reduction potential so that it is negative, do you simply add together the reduction potentials or do you flip the reduction potential back, and then do cathode ...

Does anyone know if we will always be given the molar heat capacities of ideal gases when we are trying to calculate heat? If not, would you mind explaining that Cp,m=(5/2)R thingy please

Heating Curves

Is it necessary for us to understand heating curves? If so, can someone please explain to me what the heating curve is trying to show? I was looking at the one in the textbook in Chapter 8 (Box 8.1) and it was confusing me. (It's the one with "Differential Power" as the y-axis and "Te...

Re: Calorimeter Questions

Do we need to know how to do questions related to calibrating the calorimeter? If so, how do we do those? Do you just make the value of q negative?

Can someone please explain work of expansion? I remember Professor Lavelle mentioning something about constant pressure and volume change, but I don't really understand.

Re: Polydentates

Does the name sulfato refer to both (SO4)2- and (OSO3)2-? I know for (NO2)2- there is a different name when the O is bonding to the transition metal instead of the N. Is sulfate like that as well?

Re: MO adding/deleting e-

In a homonuclear molecule does it matter to which atom you add the e-? For example, If the ion has 2e- should you distribute the electrons evenly with one e- to each atom, or does it not matter?
