Re: Names of certain functional groups

There are only a few so I'd recommend learning them. But, I'm pretty sure we just need to know how to use them in naming.

Re: Question on the eclipsed bonds of Cyclopentanes

The ball and stick model shown in the course reader is contoured to display the actual structure of the molecule. Due to the strain, the atoms shift so that they are no eclipsed bonds.

Both N and S have a lone pair, so either can donate this to form a coordinate covalent bond.

Re: Nucleophiles that are Neutral?

If you remember from chem 14a, some atoms may have empty orbitals. Filling these will give the atom increased stability and therefore they attract electrons to fill up these orbitals.

Re: Slow Step

The slow step isn't required to find the mechanism. In the mechanism we look for the slowest step and consider it the rate determining step. This is determined by experimentally.

Re: Reducing Hydrogen Ions

Hydrogen has an electric potential of 0. By definition, a species with a lower electric potential has higher reducing nature (higher tendency to take electrons) and therefore only negative cell potentials can reduce H *spontaneously*.

Re: pH and the Cell Potential

The pH of the solution represents the concentration of the Hydrogen ions in the solution. By inserting these concentrations into the Nernst equation we can calculate the cell potential.

Re: Quiz 1 prep #9

Gibbs free energy and entropy of a system are both state function. As the process is a cyclic function, the system always returns to the same state. Hence, as it returns to the same state the change is 0 in the aforementioned properties.

Re: Telling if oxides are acidic or basic

Oxides of the first two groups are basic and as you move towards the right the acidic nature of the oxides start to increase. The oxides on the far right are always acidic but the ones in the middle may be amphoteric or acidic. There are only a few amphoteric oxides so I'd reccomend that you memoriz...

Generally, a triple bond is stronger than a double which in turn is stronger than a single bond. However, to know for sure we must look at the bond disassociation energies to find out which one is the strongest.
