In the photo, which bond would be which on the carbon I labeled 3? How would I be able to tell that on a test?

Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Dear Dr. Lavelle, After a bad experience in AP Chem, I really thought I hated chemistry, and that I could never understand it. Then I had you as a professor for both chem 14A and 14B, and I must say when I first picked your class, I was scared that I would hate it. I didn't. Having you as my profess...

Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2017

for #1, why do we need "iso" infant of propyl? wouldn't the 4- signify the branching? This is because "iso" identifies that there is 2 CH3's coming off of 1 CH (in all there is 3 carbons so prop). That is what CH(CH3)2 means so iso is used and it is connected to the 4th carbon a...

I am having trouble viewing the midterm review session. Is there any one else having this problem? It says the plugin is not supported when I try and watch it.

2013 Midterm Q6B [ENDORSED]

In the 2013 midterm Q6B, we are asked to determine when different quantities provide a criterion for assessing the spontaneity of a reaction. Why are we unable to tell whether the reaction is spontaneous or not using delta S but we can tell using delta S (total)?

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers

Can anyone explain how they calculated the enthalpy of vaporization for question 4? deltaH sublimation = deltaH vaporization + deltaH fusion so by manipulating the equation to make deltaH vaporization = deltaH sublimation - deltaH fusion, you can then calculate the enthalpy of vaporization given th...

Charge of ligand

On question Q5A from the 2015 final, it asks what the charge of the ligand called "corrin-DMB" is, and hints that this can be found by taking the formal charges of each coordinated Nitrogen. In the answer, it says that the top left Nitrogen has a formal charge of -1. How do you get that fo...

A better way to figure this out is by determining the bond order of each, rather than drawing out the lewis structures.

Bond length, 2012 Midterm Question 6B

Using molecular orbital theory, list the following molecules from shortest bond length to the longest bond length.

B2^+, B2, B2^-, B2^2-

How would you tell which which would have to shortest or the longest length?

So if the equation does not use a +/-, then the uncertainty of speed is the value given, but if it does include a +/-, the uncertainty is the value doubled? I thought that the value always meant that it the uncertainty was that value above or below? For example, even if the question had not said +/-...

In the chem refreshers, each person who was holding a session was focusing on a specific topic. Will these sessions be the same way? Or would they just answer the questions each student brings to the learning sessions?
