Re: Relationship between pKa and pKb

Why would a low value of pKb mean that the base is stronger then?

Re: question 12.63

Another question regarding problem 63:

What is the significance of the line in the student solutions manual referencing octylamine? How does that relate to the calculation of Ka?

Relationship between pKa and pKb

If pKa + pKb = pKw = 14, why is it that increasing the pKa also increases the pKb?

Re: What is MO theory for? [ENDORSED]

Bond order = 1/2 (Number of electrons in bonding orbitals - number of electrons in antibonding orbitals) The antibonding orbitals are the orbitals marked with an asterisk (*). You draw the molecular orbital diagram, then count the number of electrons in the bonding and antibonding orbitals, and then...

Re: Determining States of Matter in Reactions

I know we were told that we didn't need to know how to determine the state of matter for the quizzes, but the Fall 2012 Midterm has questions that ask us to balance an equation and write the states of matter of all the compounds. Are we expected to know this, and if so where can I find out how to do...

Chapter 2 Question 37b

Question 37b asks whether the following statement is true or false: "Electrons in an s-orbital are more effective than those in other orbitals at shielding other electrons from the nuclear charge because an electron in an s-orbital can penetrate to the nucleus of the atom." The solution ma...

Explaining particle-like nature of electromagnetic radiation on HW 1.21 [ENDORSED]

HW Question 1.21 asks you to choose which phenomena from a list of observations best supports the idea that electromagnetic radiation has the properties of particles. The options are a) black body radiation, b) electron diffraction, c) atomic spectra and d) the photoelectric effect. I understand tha...

Electromagnetic Spectrum [ENDORSED]

A lot of the homework questions require referencing the electromagnetic spectrum figure (Figure 1.9) and the spectral series' (Figure 1.10) - will students be expected to be able to answer extensive questions on these topics without referring to the figures on the quiz?
