Re: Root naming

Hope this question makes sense.. These are two examples taken from Problem Set 2 (E )-3-bromo-2,4-dimethylhepta-2,4-diene (Z)-4-ethyl-6-methylhept-3-enal Why is one hepta- and one hept-? What are the rules when it comes to adding/dropping the -a? Can someone explain to me when to use trans and cis?

Re: Cyclohexene example in course reader [ENDORSED]

Because of the double bond. We would have to prioritize the double bond and cross it. You would start with the Chloro right next to the bond as 1 and continue counting from there.

Re: 2013 Final Q3 Part A

For the cathode and anode make sure that they are in the correct state. So for cathode make sure it is written as a reduction. For the anode make sure its being oxidized. And if you have to switch the products and the reactions to get to the right state then change the sign on your voltage and add u...

Re: How to tell whether a molecule is eclipsed or staggered by looking at the 2D repersentation?

To add on to this, you can tell mostly because the Newman projection gives you the 2-D image looking along the C-C bond - think of it as facing C1 head-on so that C2 is perfectly behind it. Staggered and eclipsed just refer to the positions of the hydrogens in this radial image - staggered means th...

You number the substituents based off the lowest number/location on the parent chain.

Solve for X

Thanks
