Re: Isopropyl vs Propyl [ENDORSED]
Lavelle said we would need to know both the IUPAC and Common Names so I'm assuming he'll want us to use the common names when applicable.

Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2017
Can someone help me with #3 I don't understand how both of them are nucleophiles? The line diagram has multiple double bonds which are made up of a pi bond. These pi bonds serve as areas of high electronegativity due to their being so many localized electrons at each pi bond. This make it attracted...

Re: Multiple Line Structures
You want to make your line structures still indicative of the bond angles. So this goes back to chem 14a so for example when you have a trigonal planar shape your angles will be close to 120 degrees.

Re: Double Bond Nucleophile
I'm pretty sure they were just generalizing that propene was the nucleophile but yes the double bond would specifically be the nucleophile in this case so when you do draw curved arrows depicting the movement of electrons you would connect it to the double bond specifically.

Organic chemistry is difficult. Those who study it have alkynes of trouble.

Re: Gibbs Free Energy
Since Gibbs Free Energy is what is used to figure out spontaneity it doesn't need to be known throughout the process. The change in Gibbs Free Energy just has to be negative to be spontaneous and that is the biggest utilization of this concept. So it is only final and the initial states that matter ...

Re: delta U=q+w
Well to my knowledge it seems that the delta U equals 0 since if heat is going into the system q= some positive number but if equal amount of work is being done by the system (through expansion) than w= some negative number. So it kind of a situation where you 5+(-5)= 0. The heat and work cancel eac...

Are you talking about like when water stays the same temperature during a phase shift even when heat is being added?

Re: Electron-donating properties
CH3 has electron donating properties because when you draw the Lewis diagram for this species you'll see that the carbon has a an unpaired electron that it is ready to donate!

Inside a coordination complex ligands are the species that bind to the transition metal.

Re: Studying for the Midterm
Also I would definitely go over the past midterms to get an idea of what type of questions will be like and go over the quizzes. And what I personally did is go through all the midterms and identify which problems I was iffy about doing or didn't understand and focused on those specifically.

Like the person above said both ways are technically correct but the point of using the noble gas abbreviation is to make writing the configuration shorter and simpler so I think [Kr] would be more appropriate.

Re: Confusion on which orbitals fill first
This is because initially the 6s state is a lower energy than the 5d which is why it gets filled before 5d but once there are to electrons in the 6s state than and electrons enter the 5d state like La, Hf, Ta, etc. then the 5d is lower which is why it begins fill that state. But anyways Lavelle said...

I'm pretty sure you are referring to one of the problems in the workbook and when it ask for lowest frequency of light that will cause photoelectric emission is simply asking what is the minimum frequency needed to generate enough energy to displace an electron. Which should be the frequency with en...

Also just to help establish a connection whenever the electron is excited by the photon you can view the absorption spectrum to find exactly which waves of light the electron is absorbing to move to that higher energy level.
