Re: 2016 Final Question 4a

To answer your first question, I'm not 100% sure but I think its from the electrons in the balanced reaction. If you add up the charges on the reactants side of the equation, you get -4 and for the products side, the charge is 0. I'm assuming the n=4 refers to the 4 electrons that would be "add...

Total entropy includes the system and the surroundings. Standard entropy just includes the system.

Reduction Potentials

When you are given the standard reduction potentials (E^0) for two of the half reactions, how do you know which value to make negative since reduction potentials are always positive values?

Re: HW 12.17

A Lewis Acid is a species that accepts an electron pair because it will form another bond. Electrons are drawn towards the electronegative oxygen which makes the species act like a Lewis Acid.

Re: [H3O][OH-]=10^-14

Because that will always equal the Kw or the ionization constant for water. From the equations of two water molecules in equilibrium with [H3O+] and [OH-], liquids are not written in the Kw, so only [H30+] and [OH-] will be in the equation making those two equal to the ionization constant (Kw).

Right name for the complex ion

I just have a question on what would be the appropriate name for the complex ion [FeCl3(H20)3]. Would the name be triaquatrichloroferrate(III) or triaquatrichloroiron(III)? Would making iron (III) ferrate be the appropriate thing to do?

Could someone please explain what bond length/strength of the bond has to do with the molecule's ionic character? I'm a bit confused on this.

Re: "Higher" Electron Affinity

Yes. The negative sign accounts for the fact that energy is being released, so -60 would be higher than -50 because -60 shows the atom has a greater attraction for an electron. A more negative electron affinity means a greater attraction for an electron.

Re: Electon Orbitals

I wouldn't completely disregard Bohr's model, but I would use quantum mechanics more because it is more specific. The only thing important in the Bohr model is the size of the orbital "n." Quantum mechanics treats the electron as a particle and wave, so we can use three different quantum n...

Re: Wavelengths [ENDORSED]

You should convert your answer to what was originally given in the question. However, if the question is also asking you to identify a specific type of light, you should convert to nanometers so the wavelength is easy to identify.
