For numbering the carbon atoms for cycloalkanes. Why do we not find the longest chain and start with that as opposed to just counting the ring structure

Re: Differential Rate Law

In certain cases you can use the product concentrations but it is not always accurate because sometimes the product that gets formed cant go back to reactants lile gas going into the surroundings. So it is more reliable to use the inital reactants concentration.

Re: Overall Rate Law

Yes the overall rate law is the same as the slowest rate because the slowest rate of the reaction is the rate determining step so that will be what the overall rate of the reaction is dependent on

Balancing reactions

When we balance half reactions, and double the reaction, why do we not double the E(not)? Why is it kept constant but when flipped it, we must change the E to negative?

Re: Clarification on units

You use KJ's when the question asks for enthalpy. However KJ/mol is used when dealing with standard enthalpy of formation. The reason is that standard enthalpy of formation is calculated per one mole of that product.

Re: Shape for Sulfur Tetrafluoride

When determining the shape first look at how many regions of electron density there are around the central atom. In this case even though S has 4 bonds, it also has a lone pair so 5 total regions of electron density. Making it a trigonal bipyrmidal. However the lone pair creates a strong repulsion w...

Re: Forming double bonds [ENDORSED]

I believe it is because the atom doesn't have any more valence electron to share evenly 1 to 1. So the atom with the lone pair will just share both of it's electrons with the other atom forming a bond. It cannot just give it one of its electrons and hold on to the other one because then a bond doesn...

Re: Ionic Bonds of Octet Outliers

Unlike covalent bonding where they share their electrons, in ionic bonding, the elements with high electronegativty like Oxygen and Flourine pull the electrons from He, Li, Be. So oxygen for example would satisfy the octet rule becoming an anion while the metal would become a cation.

Re: Slight Confusion about Orbitals

From what I believe, the orbitals tell us roughly the movement of the electrons around the nucleus. They move in wave like form along those dimensions. However they may not be exactly moving on those orbitals because it is hard to determine exactly where they are at a certain time, but they tell us ...
