Re: Numbering Priority

Yes, that seems correct. Substituents also get priority from alphabetical order if the numbering is the same from either side.

Re: Cell Diagram and Pt(s)

Pt(s) is added to a cell diagram when one or both of the elements being reduced/oxidized, is aqueous in both states. Then, the element needs a solid electrode so Platinum is used because it does not react and provides a surface for the oxidation/reduction to occur.

Re: Transition Steps

Usually the atom, for electrophilic addition, will go to where the double bond is breaking. For SN2, the atom goes to the spot of the atom it is replacing (if that makes sense). The transition state is kind of just making the mechanism into 2 parts so it is easier to visualize what order it occurs in.

How do we determine which step is the slow step in order to find the correct mechanism?

Re: 2015 Midterm Q4&5 part D

We have to do step 3 because it wants the entropy of vaporization of water at 298k, so we need to bring it back down to room temperature in order to do that because the first two steps just calculate it for boiling

Balancing Reaction Acidic and Basic

I was wondering if we need to know how to balance redox reactions acidicly and basically (like adding H+ and -OH) for the midterm. It was not covered in class but it is mentioned in the book.

I think we'll cover them as we cover more of the chapter, but if you are curious, page 55 of the course reader (the page at the beginning of the section) lists a lot of the ones that we will be using.

Re: Cell diagram

A porous disk would be represented by a disk(or wall) connect the two beakers. Instead of it being two separate beakers, it's like a beaker with two compartments, split by the porous disk. Here's a link to a picture.

Re: Energy of a Gas?

I do not think we have to as I don't remember Lavelle discussing this. However, most formulas and proofs we have to know are given to us (you can check what is on there by looking at the periodic table that came with the course reader.)

I do not think so because they would have asked if you would also want that, but this quarter's course reader has some old midterms and finals in the back if you want some practice.

Re: 2013 Final Question 2C

The question says that all of these have the [Kr]4d^10 configuration EXCEPT one of the following, which by what you discovered, would be Pd. So, Pd is the answer because it is the only one that does NOT have that configuration.

Conjugate Seesaw [ENDORSED]

When we get tested on acids and bases, which I guess will be part of the final, will we be told if something is acting as an acid or base for these conjugate problems, or do we just have to figure it out ourselves?

Re: Significant Figures [ENDORSED]

I think he said that because the volumes were so small for that example that using sig figs would not show the change in concentration. So, in that case we would not use sig figs, but unless otherwise stated, I believe we have to use them.

Re: Chemical Equilibrium [ENDORSED]

Well, when a reaction reaches equilibrium, it looks as if it has stopped reacting, but that is only because it is going fast from reactants to products and products to reactants. The reaction rates are the same going forwards and backwards. For a reaction to reach equilibrium, it must be reversible,...

How are you guys studying for the midterm? The reading in the textbooks is quite long to re-read so I was just planning on going over the course reader and homework, but I'm not really sure if that's "in-depth" enough.

Moles give a consistent method to convert between atoms & molecules and grams. Also, one mole of anything will have 6.02e23 molecules of the substance, thus making it more consistent. One gram of O2 does not have the same amount of molecules as one gram of CO2. It's basically to keep measurement...
