Re: Closed system and Midterm

Closed system just means that energy can be added/removed, and this can happen by heating or compression. So yes. In an open system, on the other hand, matter can be added/removed as well as energy.

Memorize C-H torsional strain values?

Anyone know if we will be expected to calculate the K from the difference in gibbs free energy of two conformations? And if so, do we have to memorize that a C-H eclipsed pair adds around 4KJ of energy?

Thank you Dr. Lavelle! It seems rare to have such a genuine professor who cares so much about the success of his students. I really appreciate how much time you spent to put together all of the resources you gave to us these past two quarters.

Naming what carbon the double/triple bond is on?

For naming, do we have to number which double bond the carbon is on?
e.g: 2-pentene (if the double bond was on the second carbon)

Re: Post All Chemistry Jokes Here

Thermodynamics is a funny subject. The first time you go through it, you don't understand it at all. The second time you go through it, you think you understand it, except for one or two small points. The third time you go through it, you know you don't understand it, but by that time you are so use...

Why does molar heat capacity at a constant volume always yield a greater amount of temperature change than molar heat capacity at a constant pressure? Also why does heat capacity increase with complexity of a molecule??
