Re: 2013 Final Exam #2
Why did you switch the signs for hydrolysis of ATP form positive to negative and the formation of acetyl phosphate from negative to positive? In part 2B, the question states that the phosphorylation of acetic acid is the REVERSE of the hydrolysis of acetyl phosphate (this info is in parentheses). S...

Re: Torsional Strain [ENDORSED]
In lecture, Professor Lavelle mentioned that the most stable conformations have the least energy, and the least stable conformations have the most energy. Can somebody explain why there is this inverse relationship between energy and stability in conformations?

I think this is unnecessary, because we only need the book to read and do homework/practice problems. Think of it as a second textbook. The turquoise course reader has all the notes we need for lectures,

Example on page 50 in course reader (Gold)
In the example about gold on page 50 of the course reader, delta Goredox was +1.56 x 105 J. This told us that gold will not dissolve in 1M nitric acid. What about this answer led us to this conclusion? How would we know if the gold DID dissolve?

Degeneracy vs Entropy trends
On page 29 of the course reader, it says "Molecules in gaseous phase occupy many more states than liquid phase & solid phase" and the following is given: W G > W L > W S since S = kB ln W then S G >> S L > S S Is there a reason that in the second part about entropy, there is a ">>...

Re: Question about the ideal gas law [ENDORSED]
When answering any science question involving math, it's important to consider what information was given to you. For example, if you are to find the change in energy of a system, but are not given work, you can find work by using the ideal gas law (PV=nRT). However, if you ARE given work, then you ...

Prefixes in Naming (mono)
When using prefixes for ligands, are we supposed to disregard "mono"? Question 17.29c has one aqua ligand, and I thought it was monoaqua but the answer has it as only aqua.

I'm not entirely sure, but for the purpose of this class, memorize the list of strong acids. All other acids will most likely be weak acids, according to my PLF.

Re: Formal Charge Formula Clarification
When solving for formal charge, your compound will only be stable if the formal charge is 0. To determine which of two resonance structures is the most likely, choose the one with the most formal charges of 0 for each atom. Two resonance structures may have an overall formal charge of 0, but the one...

Re: Help needed for molarity problem [ENDORSED]
In order to solve this problem, you will be using MV=MV. You are given the initial mass of the solute, the initial volume, the final volume, and you are asked to find the final molarity. The molar mass of KCl is 74.551 g/mol (found using the molar masses of K and Cl). First, find the initial molarit...

Re: When do we know whether to use gram vs. kilogram, etc.? [ENDORSED]
The question will usually tell you what units to express your answer in, but if it doesn't, I would say stick to the standard (grams or meters). Also, you should be able to receive credit as long as your answer and units match up. For example, if your answer is 1500 grams, it's ok to write down 1.5 ...

Re: Mole Ratio: Whole Number Ratios vs. Decimal Ratios
I had a similar question, but mine was for F21. When calculating the molar ratios for the empirical formula, my numbers were slightly different than the ones in the solutions manual, but I kept them that way until the end of the problem. I had 8.07 mol C (8.18 in solutions), 12.94 mol H (13.0 in sol...
