Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2017

how would you draw out 2-butene or anything with a number in front of it ??? For 2-butene the number identifies where the double bond is located since but ene (the -ene means a double bond) so it is located on the second Carbon. For anything else with a number in front of it, it just means what car...

Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2017

for #1, why do we need "iso" infant of propyl? wouldn't the 4- signify the branching? This is because "iso" identifies that there is 2 CH3's coming off of 1 CH (in all there is 3 carbons so prop). That is what CH(CH3)2 means so iso is used and it is connected to the 4th carbon a...

Re: Rate law factors [ENDORSED]

I saw this in the chapter in the textbook and am curious about the answer/people's thoughts. It states, what would be the units of k for an overall order of 3/2 if the concentrations were expressed in grams per milliliter, g.mL-1?

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers

Hi Everyone, I have a question on #10. So when I did the problem, I divided 200/20, but I was wondering if someone can please explain the conversion factor to get the answer on the key? Thank you I'm not sure if the conversion factor is on the key for this one or not but you first have to convert d...

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers

I know people have already posted how to find work (w) for #3 but what do we do to find heat (q)? I know the problem consists of an ideal gas, change in volume and pressure, etc.. but is it just a modified version of q=nC(delta_T)? From what I was told, for this q=-w so it's just the negative of wh...

Re: 8.31 Monatomic Gas

So for an ideal gas your focusing on only one atom. But for a monatomic gas you're focusing on multiple atoms(N) so each of the three directions (x, y, and z) contribute 1/2 kT per molecule, for a total of 3/2NkT per molecule.
Hope thats what you were looking for!

Re: Heat Capacity

Heat capacity is an extensive property because it depends on the amount of the substance being used such as if 5ml is being used or 10ml. So an intensive property doesn't depend on the amount of substance being used so it doesn't matter if 5ml are being used or 10ml.

So if we were to draw a nucleus on the periodic table to show which elements are closer to it in this case, would it go in the upper right corner of the periodic table or the bottom left? (I think I'm thinking too hard about this)

So if a decimal is present, the numbers before it and after it are counted and that's how many are sig figs? Then, if there is no decimal in the number, there is only one sig fig?
