Adiabatic Expansion Question

In an adiabatic expansion, the volume goes from 1 Liters to 2.56 Liters at an external pressure of 1 atm. It releases 73J of heat at 1 atm, and returns to its original delta U. Find final volume. So I understand that in an adiabatic expansion q=0, and so delta U equals work. Therefore, work (w) equa...

Path dependent property

In the course reader, it says that work (w) and heat (q) depend on the path taken, and therefore are not state properties. So, my question is, what does it mean to be path dependent?

Solids in Equilibrium Reactions

In the course reader, it says that "molar concentration of a pure substance (solid or liquid) does not change in a reaction." However, during lecture, Professor Lavelle mentioned that solids do not show up in equilibrium reactions. Can anyone explain to me why this rule exists? Thank you!

Difference in Electronegativity [ENDORSED]

So I know that if the electronegativity difference > 2, then it's considered an ionic bond. And that if the electronegativity difference <1.5, then it's considered a covalent bond. What if the electronegativity difference is between the intervals of 1.5 and 2? How do you determine if the heteronucle...

Reaction Stochiometry L.3 [ENDORSED]

L.3 Compounds that can be used to store hydrogen in vehicles are being actively sought. One reaction being studied for hydrogen storage is Li3N + 2 H2 ---> LiNH2 + 2 LiH. (a) What amount (in moles) of H2 is needed to react with 1.5 mg of Li3N? (b) Calculate the mass of Li3N that will produce 0.650 m...
