Dr. Lavelle,
Thank you for being such a kind and supportive teacher. You have provided us with so many useful resources to succeed and truly helped me get better in chem. Thanks also for always communicating with us and for having everything ready and graded in such a timely manner!

Re: Transition states and stability
Transition states have partially formed bonds which gives them a much higher energy and makes them very unstable while intermediates have fully formed bonds so transition states are normally always more unstable than the intermediates.

Substituent naming
If you have a ring structure that has a ethyl substituent with a fluorine attached at the end do you write it alphabetically so ethylflouro or does the fluorine always go in front so flouroethyl?

Cell Potential vs Standard Cell Potential
Can someone explain the difference between standard cell potential (E knot) and cell potential (E)? Also if the problem simply asks for the cell potential are we solving for E?

Re: Converting L/atm to Joules
On the periodic table that came with Lavelle's course reader there are a bunch of equations and conversions that we will always be given on a exam or quiz and it includes the conversion from L.atm to J. It shows that 1L.atm=101.325J so with simple stoichiometry you can do the conversion. Hope that h...

Re: What is Kb in Entropy? Entropy Clarification? [ENDORSED]
Regarding entropy and equilibrium it seems that entropy correlates to the amount of states you can be in. Thus a low entropy value means some unit of energy is densely packed in a small volume while a high entropy value means a unit of energy is able to occupy a larger region/state which makes it mo...

Re: Heat Capacity
Specific heat seems to be the amount of energy needed per unit of mass to raise the temperature of a sample by 1 degree celsius while heat capacity is just the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of a sample by 1 degree celsius.

Re: Chem 14B and 14BL [ENDORSED]
After talking to some upperclassmen it seems that if you really enjoy chemistry and have a strong foundation of all the concepts then you can take 14B and 14BL in the same quarter. However many people hold off on taking 14BL until they're done with 14B because it helps to understand the material bef...
