Re: Balancing with OH- v. H+
Occasionally, the question will tell you whether the reaction is taking place in either acidic or basic solution. If it's acidic, balance using H+. If it's basic, balance using OH- and H2O.

Yes, you are correct! Double and triple bonds take priority over all substituents.

Re: Unit of Equilibrium Constant K
Hi! K as an equilibrium constant does not have any units. However, this question asks for k, the rate constant, which does have units. The units are different occasionally depending on the order of the reaction. This is because the rate law's units are always constant, so k units change to accommoda...

No, the 4 only denotes which carbon the substituent is attached to. If we did not use iso, the naming of the substituent would be completely different.

Hi, Does anyone know whether 14CL can be taken at the same time as 14C or whether it is reccommended to be taken after the completion of 14C? Are you currently taking 14B and 14BL together this quarter? I think it is recommended to take 14C and 14CL not concurrently b/c the course material may over...

Hi! I've heard from people who took the class last year that you can attend the first lecture, after which Professor Hardinger will take student information from those who wish to enroll in his class. I'm not sure if he'll be doing it this year, but it wouldn't hurt to go!

Re: physical or phase change
Sublimation is the conversion of a solid directly to a gas. Because enthalpy is a state function, you could also look as this process as a solid becoming a liquid first, and then a gas. The enthalpy value for that process would be the same as the solid substance becoming a gas immediately. Therefore...

Re: Question on Units of Temperature
Mathematically, to convert from Celsius to Kelvin, you add 273.15. When you subtract two numbers that both have 273.15 added to them, they effectively cancel out, leaving you with just the final temperature minus the initial temperature but with the units now in Kelvin. Hope that helped a bit!

Re: copper anion/cation e configuration
The electron configuration of Cu+ is actually [Ar] 3d10. We remove electrons from the 4s orbital before the 3d orbital, because the 4s orbital is actually slightly higher than 3d when filled.

Avogadro's number is involved because the value given is the energy needed to break a mole of C-C bonds. To determine the energy needed to break one bond, you have to divide by Avogadro's number.

Re: Why are their two bonds on the circled bonds?
These are double bonds, and they are needed to give each carbon atom a full octet of electrons. If you count the number of valence electrons for the molecule and compare with the number of bonds, you'll see that they correspond to each other (2 electrons for each bond). I believe the double bonds ar...
