Re: Final Exam Details and Review Sessions Winter 2017
Will the final be more heavily concentrated on material we learned in the 2nd half of the class? Or will there be a generally equal distribution of questions from the beginning of the quarter through now?

Re: Nernst Equation with ln vs. log
I heard that using log is the standard way, but seeing that we have to memorize the 0.0592 value, isn't it simpler to use ln instead?

Re: HW Problem 8.75b
In Bond Enthalpy problems like this one, how do we decide which bonds are broken? For example in 8.75b why aren't the C--H bonds and the C--C bonds broken? Thanks.

Reaction Enthalpies
Through Hess's Law we know that the total enthalpy change of a reaction is equal to the sum of the all the enthalpy changes in the steps of the reaction. But we also know that the standard reaction enthalpy is equal to the difference between the ∆Hf˚(products) and the ∆Hf˚(reactants). So when a prob...

Re: Midterm over!!
The midterm is not curved. Only at the end of the quarter when all the points are accumulated there is a slight curve. I don't think your final grade will be affected that much by the curve unless you have lower than a C or D and you need to pass the class. This is true. And Professor Lavelle also ...

Re: Valence-shell configuration and periodic trends
What does it mean to have overlapping atomic orbitals? What is meant by the greater splitting energy that results in more overlapping?

Re: Formal Charge
If we are asked to give the formal charges for each atom of a Lewis Structure, do we give the average of the formal charges? Are we supposed to know which elements get exclude from resonance (ex. Sulfur since it is harder to form a double bond with it?)

I need clarification on finding the electron configuration of Pb. Can someone explain how we get 4f14 as part of it? Thank you.

kJ vs. J
Because kJ is an SI base unit, should we always assume that an answer should be in kJ versus J even if the given information in the question is given in J?

Video Modules vs. Bruincast [ENDORSED]
What is the difference between Lavelle's bruincast videos and the video modules on the class website? Is one more helpful than the other?
