Re: Final Exam points
Did anyone find out how/when they check for posts? I asked 2 TA's and was under the impression that it would be fine. Not sure though.

Re: Where to start counting Winter 2013 final 6A
Dr. Lavelle told us not to use the sum of the numbers as a reliable way to figure out whether we have the right answer or not. Instead, if you see that there is another way to (correctly) answer the question that will provide you with a lower number in it, then you go with that one. So, in this case...

Homework 15.65 part C
For the reversible, one step reaction 2A <-- --> B+C, the forward rate constant for the formation of B is 265 L/mol x min and the rate constant for the reverse action is 392 L/mol x min. The activation energy for the forward reaction is 39.7 kJ/mol and that of the reverse reaction is 25.4 kJ/mol. Wh...

Re: Calculating concentration #23c
So multiplying (2mol A/1 molB)(0.034 mol B /L) and then subtracting it from (0.0153 mol A/L) would give everything in terms of A. So, is the reason why we do it this way because we were only given [A]o and the concentration of B after a certain time & needed to get it all in terms of A? Thanks!

Re: Where to start counting Winter 2013 final 6A
As previously mentioned, the double bond takes priority and you have to move across the double bond. Also, to help figure out why the answer is not 2,3,4,4: If you start counting from the double bond and move left you will get 1,5,5,6 tetramethylcylohexene, instead of 2,3,4,4, tetramethyclyclohexene...

Winter Final 2013 6B
I was wondering how to approach this question: A facial cream known to assist with dry skin has the following common name ingredients listed: stearic acid; glycerin; and acetyl alcohol. Their restive IUPAC names are: octadecanoic acid; propane-1,2,3-triol; and hexadecan 1-ol. Write the common name a...

Will the posts made before the actual final be considered for the "weekly online discussion," so would a question posted tonight count? Thanks!

Dear Dr. Lavelle You're the best! Thank you for all the extra time and effort you've put into this class and the students. You have made the material approachable and interesting, without it being overwhelming. I am sincerely so thankful to have had such a caring professor who goes above an beyond f...

Also, could someone explain when and how to use iso- in naming? Or just how to do #1?
I was also wondering the same thing. How do we know that the first step is the rate limiting step? Does it have to do with the intermediates in step 1?

Re: Quiz 2 Prep Winter 2017
For Quiz 2 Prep, how do you answer #1, where it asks to find the rate of formation of NO2 when the rate of decomposition of N2O5 is 2.89 mol/L*s? I believe this should be correct: So the reaction you are given is: N2O5(g) → NO2(g) + O2(g) but it is not balanced. After balancing the reaction, you sh...

Re: Quiz 2 Winter 2017
This is a really basic question, but is it fine to switch the sign of a negative rate at the end? So, if my answer is negative, could I just make it positive for full credit, or do I have to set up the equation to get a positive answer from the very beginning?

Agree with all the comments above. If I'm not mistaken the formulas on the laminated sheet will be the same ones provided to us during exams, so it may be helpful to use the sheet during practice problems as well.

I have also seen people sell their materials (practice quizzes with or without the course reader) on Bruinwalk for a much cheaper cost, so it might be helpful to look there too.
