I don't think the format matters too much. The syllabus just mentions being clear what problem you are working on making sure you have the chapter and problem number.
This same question came up in my discussion section and my TA said that they aren't really looking for the correct sig figs. It is possible to go from molecular to empirical. You would just need to get each of the subscripts in the formula and change it so they are at the simplest ratio and still keeping whole numbers. I don't think we would really need to do this though.
