To prepare a nutrient solution, a nurse dilutes 1.0L of 0.30 M C6H12O6(aq) by adding 4.0L of water. The nurse then adds 100. ml of the diluted solution to an intravenous bag. How many moles of carbon atoms will the IV bag contain?

Molarity=moles of solute/volume of solution, so 0.30 M = 0.30 mol/1L. Since there are 5 liters after the nurse dilutes 1 L of the solution by adding 4 L of water, the equation becomes 0.30 mol/5 L= a concentration of 0.06 M. We then multiply this (0.06 mol/L) by 0.10 L (100 mL=0.10 L). The answer should be 0.006 moles and since we just want the carbon atoms, we will multiply our answer (0.006 mol) by 6 moles of carbon as shown in the formula (C6H12O6).

The moles of carbon are then found to be 0.036 mol of C.
