is density simply the amount of mass a substance that s consisted of per volume?

The equation for density is density = mass/volume. I believe that your explanation is correct.

Density is equal to mass divided by volume. Using SI units, it is kilograms per cubic meter.

Grams per cubic centimeter is also commonly used.

Density is the ratio of mass to volume, mass/volume(either in liters or meters cubed).
DENSITY is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it. Density defined in a qualitative manner as the measure of the relative "heaviness" of objects with a constant volume.
