Homework Question H11

I was having trouble balancing the second part of H11, where the Fe2O3 reacts with carbon monoxide to make iron and carbon dioxide, can someone tell me how it's supposed to be done?

Fe3O4 + CO ---> Fe + CO2
Balance Iron first, then balance the carbon and oxygen.
This one is a bit hard but you should end up with Fe3O4 + 4 CO ---> 3 Fe + 4 CO2

For this problem, a good trick to remember is that you should always start balancing the equation with the elements that appear the least number of times. In this case, Fe and C both appear once on the reactant side and once on the product side, while oxygen appears twice on the left and once on the right. So, you should only attempt to balance oxygen after balancing both Fe and C.

I also always start by balancing anything that is not carbon, oxygen, or hydrogen. In most equations theres is a good chance youll have some form of a hydrocarbon or oxygen or water, so by balancing other elements first you can then remedy the unbalanced elements easily with O2, H2O, etc.
