### Problem G13

Hello, can someone explain part B of problem G13? (b) An experiment requires the use of 60.0 mL of 0.50 M NaOH(aq). The stockroom assistant can only find a reagent bottle of 2.5 M NaOH(aq). How can the 0.50 M NaOH(aq) be prepared?
From the solutions manual, I understand why 12ml of the 2.5 M NaOH(aq) is needed (calculated using formula Vinitial * Minitial = Vfinal * Mfinal), but why do we need to put that 12ml into 48ml of water? Is it just to have the same volume as the initial volume?

The question is asking you how to prepare the 0.5 M of NaOH. From the given information, you know you need 60.0 mL. So if you have 12 mL of 2.5 M solution already, you just need to add 48 mL of water to make the volume total 60 mL. So yes, it is just to have the same volume as the amount the question has given.

The experiment needs to have 60 ml of the 0.5M solution. If you did not add the extra 48 ml of water, it would not be the right volume or molarity.
