### Homework L7

The camel stores the fat tristearin, C 57 H 110 O 6, in its hump. As
well as being a source of energy, the fat is also a source of water
because, when it is used, the reaction 2 C57H110O6(s) +
163 O2(g)---> S 114 CO2(g) + 110 H2O(l) takes place. (a) What
mass of water is available from 1.00 pound (454 g) of this fat? (b)
What mass of oxygen is needed to oxidize this amount of tristearin?

Can someone explain how I would approach this question? Please and thanks!

### Re: Homework L7

To start, you need to convert grams of C57H110O6 to moles. The molar mass of this fat is (57 times the molar mass of Carbon) + (110 times the molar mass of Hydrogen) + (6 times the molar mass of oxygen). Once converted to moles, you can multiply this number by 55 to convert it to moles of water since there is a 1:55 ratio of C57H110O6 to H2O in the equation given. Then, you can convert moles of water into grams of water to complete part a of the problem. Let me know if that helps! The process for part b should be similar.

### Re: Homework L7

You would approach both part a and b the same way you would approach others problems in the L section.

1)Divided by the molar mass of the molecule that is given (C57 H110 O6)
2)Multiply by (moles of the mole it is asking for divided by moles of the molecule that is given)
3)Multiply by the molar mass of the molecule it is asking for (Water and Oxygen)

Turn the mass I’m that is given into moles by dividing by the molar mass of the molecule it is asking.

Use a molar ratio to go from the first molecule to the desired one

Multiply that molecule by its molar mass in order to cancel out the moles and get just the mass!!!
