What does mmol stand for?

Postby Abby Lam 3F » Thu Oct 08, 2020 11:13 am

What does mmol stand for? (in question G5)

G5. A student prepared a solution of sodium carbonate by adding 2.111 g of the solid to a 250.0-mL volumetric flask and adding water to the mark. Some of this solution was transferred to a buret. What volume of solution should the student transfer into a flask to obtain (a)2.15 mmol Na+; (b) 4.98 mmol CO32−;(c) 50.0mg Na2CO3?

1 mmol=0.001 mol. The "m" stands for milli, so the conversion is similar to mL to L if it's easier to think of it that way!

A mmol stands for a millimole, which is one-thousandth of a normal mole.

I think it stands for millimol. Therefore 1 mmol should be equal to 0.001 mol.
Just like milliliter and liter.

mmol is the abbreviation for millimole which would convert to 1mmol = 0.001mol

It represents a "millimole," and like others have mentioned, can be compared to the converting relationship between milliliters (mL) and liters (L), so you would divide by 1000 to get from millimoles to moles. There are 1000 mmol in 1 mol. See the below example:

Convert 1700 mmol to mol.

1700 mmol / 1000 = 1.7 mol

Hope this helps!

just out of curiosity, what is the difference between the notation for micro-moles and millimoles?

To answer the above post reply, I believe a micromole is represented by "μmol" and a millimole by "mmol." I hope this helps, would love for someone else to confirm!

The abbreviation mmole stands for millimole, which is 1/1000 of a mole. If you need to convert moles to millimoles simply multiply by 1000, and if you need to convert something from millimoles to moles divide by 1000. And for the question in the comments about μmol (micromoles), the conversion between those and moles is that micromoles are 10^−6 smaller (1000000 times!)

People who are familiar with the world of chemistry, this question is for you: is it common to see other notations like this other than for micro- and milli-? Like kilomole, or something like that.

As for micromole vs millimole (the post 3 above mine), yes I believe micromole is µmol, and millimole is mmol :)

Hi there!

mmol stands for millimoles!

The unit conversion is 1 mmol = 0.001 mol.

mmol stands for a millimole which is a thousandth of a mole. To convert moles to millimoles, multiply by 1000; to convert millimoles to moles, divide by 1000.

Hello!

As what everyone else has replied, ‘mmol’ simply means millimole. Think of ‘mL’ in the context of ‘L’—millimeter to liter—both ‘mmol’ and ‘mL’ use the lowercase m to symbolize the prefix milli-.

mmol just refers to the milli-mol. Or 10^-3 of a mole.

mmol stands for millimole. It is equal to one thousandth of a millimole and analogous to milliliter, millimeter, milligram, etc. To change units from mmol to mol, divide by 1000. To change from mol to mmol, multiple by 1000.

The unit "mmol" is known as a millimole; it is equivalent to 1 mol multiplied by 1000.

mmol in the question stands for millimole which is 1x10^-3 of a mole. Any unit with the "m" in front of it stands for milli-unit, and is 1x10^-3 of that unit. Millimole is a smaller unit than mole, so there are 1000mmol in one mole.

The unit is “milli” so mmol would be 1/1000th of a mole. Another example of “milli“ is millimeter which would be 1/1000th of millimeter.

If you consider the prefixes for units, "m" stands for milli, which means 10^-3. So this would means that mol is a millimole.

Example: I have 43mmol of Calcium Carbide. How many moles of Calcium Carbide do I have?
This would be a simple conversion question, and if you know your prefixes to units, you would know that 43mmol would be equivalent to .043mol.

Just like in mg, the m stand for milligrams, the m in mol stands for milligrams. It is simply the prefix "milli."

Hi Abby,

It seems like there were quite a few people that explained what a mmol is; but in regards to the G5 question that followed, this is what I did for part A.

I found that the molar mass of sodium carbonate is 105.988 and the 250.0 mL listed = 0.250 L
I found the molarity of sodium carbonate by first finding the amount of moles in the solution (Na2CO3): 2.111g Na2CO3 * 1 mol Na2CO3/105.988 g = 0.019 mol --> I then plugged the values into the molarity formula (mass/volume) and got 0.019 mol Na2CO3/0.250 L = 0.08 M
I then used stoichiometry to solve for the volume needed for the 2.15 mmol Na+ :
2.15 mmol Na+ * 1 mol Na+/1000 mmol * 1 mol Na2CO3/2 mol Na+ * 1L/0.08 mol Na2CO3 = 0.0135 L
I converted L to mL and got 13.5 mL as my final answer to part A

A micromole is 1/1,000,000 of a mole (µM), whereas a millimole is 1/1000 of a mole. All of these prefixes go along with SI units and can be found on any SI unit chart.

Here's an example:http://kaffee.50webs.com/Science/activities/Activity.SI.Unit.Conversions.1.htm

mmol is milimole. So, when you are converting from milimoles to moles, it would be for 1 milimole, there are 10-3 moles. Hope this helps!

Yes, you are correct! 1 MICROmole is the same as 10-6 moles, while 1 MILImole is the same as 10-3 moles. Hope this helps with conversions!
