Chemical Reactions

Postby Ruth Rosales 3D » Sun Nov 29, 2020 8:31 pm

As I review for the final, I am having some trouble deriving the chemical reactions out of word problems. I understand how to balance them, but I am not sure when it would be combustion, single replacement, double replacement etc.

Is there a trick to memorizing these patterns or something else. Also if someone could drop the list of all the reactions, I just want to make sure I am not missing any.

Thank you.

I think the best way to learn these is memorization by looking at the name.
Synthesis means putting to things together, so its A+B->AB.
Decomposition means taking things apart, so its AB->A+B.
Combustion makes me think of explosions or fire, which means it must have gases involved. It's A+O2->CO2+H2O.
Single replacement means replacing one thing, so its A+BC->AC+B.
Double replacement means replacing two things, so its AB+CD->AD+CB.
In addition there are acid/base reactions and Lewis Acid/Base reactions.

I don't think we need to know what specific kind of reaction each one it; it will likely be stated. But as for combustion reactions, I remember Lavelle stating that it occurs when oxygen is a reactant and water and hydrogen are products (with heat being produced).
