Rundown on moles and molar mass
Can someone give me the rundown of moles and how to calculate to get molar mass?

Re: Rundown on moles and molar mass
Moles just means 6.022x10^23 things of something. So for example, a mole of eggs would be 6.022x10^23 eggs, like a dozen of eggs is 12. To calculate molar mass of an element or molecule, refer to the atomic weight that appears under each element in the periodic table. For example, to calculate the molar mass of Co2:
There is 1 mole carbon and 2 mole oxygen. The atomic weight for carbon is 12.01g/mol, and for oxygen is 16g/mol. So I would do 1(2.01) + 2(16) = 44.01g/mol.
The molar mass of CO2 is 44.01g/mol.
Hope this helps!

Re: Rundown on moles and molar mass
To add on, because the molar mass of each individual element depends on set values (e.g., H is 1.008g, O is 15.99g), deriving the molar mass usually requires a given value or a periodic table. Given the masses of the individual elements, you can calculate the collective molar mass of a compound. Given a balanced chemical reaction and the mass of each reactant/product, you can also convert that mass to moles (using its molar mass), then convert the moles to atoms (using Avogadro's number).

Adding on, one mole of a substance is 6.022 x 10^23 units of that substance (typically something like atoms, molecules, or ions). The concept of the mole can really just be used as a conversion factor between like mass and number of particles.

Re: Rundown on moles and molar mass
molar mas is g/mol so you can convert by multiplying or dividing just set up ratios and make sure units cancel out when in doubt.
Re: Rundown on moles and molar mass
you can think of a mole as just another unit that measures the amount of atoms/particles. 6.022E23 is the amount of atoms/particles in a mole
