In an organic reaction, when there is an H+ over the forward arrow, how is this different than adding the H+ in the first part of the reaction? Thank you.

This convention is typically used to represent the sequence of events (e.g. H⁺ is added to the compound) or focus on one compound of interest. In these cases it is the same as writing it on the left of the arrow. It can also be used to show a catalyst (e.g. H⁺ catalyzes the reaction but is not consumed).
