Transition State

Postby Dianna Grigorian 1C » Sun Mar 12, 2017 4:44 pm

When do we indicate the charges of the atoms when drawing a reaction mechanism? Is it just in the transition state to show which bonds form/break?

Positive and negative charges will be present when there are inadequate bonds to an atom. Usually, it is in the transition state where these will be present, as bonds are breaking and forming. But there are other charged species as well, such as acids and bases that serve as catalysts and otherwise.

You would need to understand the mechanism and when atoms are missing bonds/ have additional bonds to determine when to assign a positive or negative charge.
