Final Winter 2014 #5B

Postby 704709603 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 2:33 pm

Hi,
For Final Winter 2014 #5B, where does the H+ go after the Br is added to the CH3(CH2)OH? Does it go to the second CH2?
Thank you!

You could see from the diagram that the double bond becomes a single bond, so one of the Cs has received an H+ and the other a Br-.
Since the second C received the Br, the H+ most likely goes to the C on the left, which is technically the third carbon because functional group comes first.

CH2=CH-CH2-OH + H-Br ----> CH3CH-CH2-OH
It's very similar to the example on reader P84-87 about the addition of HBr across a double bond.
