Alkene + Br2

Postby Chem_Mod » Fri Oct 28, 2011 11:42 pm

In the textbook, there's an example of an alkene reacting with Br2. How is one Br partially positive and the other partially negative in Br2 when both have the same electronegativity?

Even though two Br's have the same electronegativity, Br2 molecule can be easily polarized so that one Br has partial negative charge and the other has partial positive charge. This applies only to those that are easily polarized (e.g., Br2, I2).
