Attachment of Atoms

Postby Rebecca_Arnold_3I » Mon Mar 13, 2017 2:24 pm

In the reaction CH3CH=CHCH3 + HBr does it matter on which side the Hydrogen attaches to first? I know that it attaches to one of the Carbons that is involved with the double bond, but does it matter which Carbon?

I don't think it does.

In the case that you have given no because it both carbons have the same amount of hydrogens bonded to it.

Ok thank you!
So if one carbon had fewer hydrogens attached to it, the H from the HBr would attach to the carbon with lesser hydrogens?

I believe so, since a carbon with fewer H atoms bonded to it (or fewer bonds in general) would have a greater negative partial charge (since carbon wants 4 bonds to be most stable).

Draw it based on the product (location of H and halogen atoms that were added).
