SN1 vs SN2

Postby Anh Khoa 3E » Wed Mar 15, 2017 4:07 pm

How do you differentiate between the two? I know that one is unimolecular and the other is bimolecular. But if we were not given the mechanism of the reaction and not told that it is either SN1 or SN2, how do you know it is one over the other?

This will be further discussed in Chem 14C and 14D. In this course, we did not cover SN1 reactions in class. Therefore, if you are asked about a substitution reaction, it will be SN2.
