Transition States

I don't understand where the SN1 and SN2 type of reactions are coming from. Where are they coming from? What do they apply to? Are they in the course reader? Are they talked about in the intro to OChem book? Please help!

SN2 reaction is a substitution involving a nucleophile where two molecules are involved, that's where the 2 comes from. An example of it is in the course reader on page 91. I don't remember seeing SN1 reactions in the course reader but its the same idea but the rate only depends on one substrate. The transition states are different, it's explained in this powerpoint.
