Self-Test 4.4A

In self-test 4.4A, why does step one have the larger Ea even though step two has the larger delta G knot?

In Step 1, the Ea is measured from the energy of the reactants to the energy of TS1 while in step 2, the Ea is measured from the energy of the intermediates to the energy of TS2 (check pg 154). However, a standard convention for organic chemists is to measure differences in Gibbs free energy in respect to the reactants always(p 159). This is why in step 1 the Ea is higher than in step 2, but in step 2 the Gibbs free energy is higher.
